Review: The Life and Death of Lily Drake

Info:

Title: The Life and Death of Lily Drake
Author: T. Michelle Nelson
Publisher: Inkspell Publishing
Publication Date: October 2012

Blurb:

For Lily Drake, slaying vampires is easy...Dating them is the hard part.

Lily Drake is your everyday hard-working single mom…until a gorgeous vampire shows up on her front door who she mistakenly assumes is her blind date for the evening. As one crazy scenario after another unfolds, Lily finds herself falling in love with two vampires, slaying the evil ones, and being prophesied as the savior of the entire undead race.

Deciding between pizza and Chinese take-out will no longer be one of the hard decisions facing Lily Drake once she is emerged into vampire society. Humanity or immortality? That doesn't hold a candle against this question - which of the two handsome vampire cousins?

The Life and Death of Lily Drake is not your typical vampire love story. It’s a tale about the humorous mistakes a woman makes simply trying to survive not only life, but the dating scene. How will Lily manage working full-time, taking care of her young son and fighting the undead at every turn?

Lily will have to figure it out, but who better to save the world than a mom?

My Thoughts:

As someone who reads a lot of young adult, The Life and Death of Lily Drake was a bit of a departure for me as a reviewer. There's a big difference between a angst teenager and a 30-something single mom. That said, I did enjoy the change, there was a lot less beating around the bush than we find in most YA novels.

Let's start with Lily. My favourite things about Lily were how much she cares for her son and how kick-ass she ends up being. While I don't have any children yet, I am a major family person, so I'm glad family was so important to Lily as well. However, I found that Lily's love of her family sometimes felt a bit false, considering how she seems to send her son away for week-long sleepovers while she works through a vampire love triangle (more on that later). I honestly preferred Lily in the last 20% of the book, where she becomes majorly kick-ass in order to save her son.

I had a few issues with Lily's character, however. She does something that I absolutely cannot forgive her for (I don't want to say, as it would be a spoiler). Also, she drove me a bit crazy with her refusal to make one decision or another in regards to becoming a vampire (that's not a spoiler, it's in the blurb). It's like she completely expected to have her cake and eat it too and it got on my nerves.

And on to the love triangle. Because I read mainly YA fiction, which has way too many love triangles, the love triangle in Lily Drake was nothing new and I found it annoying overall. Besides, for me at least, it was such an easy decision! The guy who likes the same things as you and you have an absolute blast spending time with, or the guy who is "romantic" and bossy. I'd pick fun over romance any day!

Overall, The Life and Death of Lily Drake had it's ups and downs for me, but if you're a paranormal romance fan with a thing for vampires, you should enjoy it.

On the Cover:

I like the cover, but I don't really think that the model fits with my view of Lily. She looks too young (and I can't see Lily with that hairstyle).

Blogging Slump Alert

It would seem January has gotten to me and I'm in a bit of a book blogging stump. Here's why:

The Blog has Taken Over my Life!!

Don't get me wrong, I love reading! Always have, always will. Still it's not my only hobby. I enjoy gaming with the bf (serious, I just bought my own copy of Counterstrike!) and sewing (new blog here). I haven't done any sewing since I started Megan Likes Books almost a year ago and that makes me sad. Yet lately I've had a packed reading schedule and I started feeling guilty when I would spend my free time doing something other than reading. Wait a second! I started Megan Likes Books as a fun hobby, not as an unpaid job! There I'm taking a step back from book blogging in an effort to re-balance my life. That does not mean I'm leaving book blogging, so don't worry! Instead, I'm slowing down to just read the books I want, when I want, and review them because I enjoy it. I won't be requesting any more review books or joining any more blog tours, at least for a while. All review books and blog tours I've already committed to will be reviewed, although admittedly probably slower than I initially meant to.

I love all my blogging friends and will try to visit blogs as much as I can, although it may be less than before. And the Paranormal Reading Challenge will go ahead as planned, because I love it!

Review: Dark Fuel + Giveaway

Info:

Title: Dark Fuel
Author: Liz Maverick
Series: Arcania #2
Publisher: Coliloquy
Publication Date: October 2012

Blurb:

Adia is finally coming into her newfound arcanic spellcasting powers. She passed her first test at the academy with a dazzling, yet inconsistent, performance, proving that, while she has potential, she still has a lot of work to do before she’s considered an equal. Never mind that she has to be ready to battle the Synelv, the Arcanae’s deadly enemy.
Luckily, Adia is partnered with an elite team of fighters: the raw and muscular shield Grey, the dashing but deadly rogue Seger, and the trusty healer Finola. Precisely the support she needs to get up to speed with her magic. Good thing, because Adia has a lot on her plate besides learning to fight the enemy. There’s the mystery of Lara’s death to solve, Delphine the mean mage to outwit, and the academy competition to win. Not to mention that her friendship with Grey might be more than just that—if they can only keep from killing each other.

The war is escalating quickly and Match Game is drawing nearer by the day. There’s no such thing as practice anymore—the Arcanae have begun sending less experienced teams into battle, and the annual competition among the students comes with a twist that will make the stakes higher than ever.

It’s going to take a lot to keep Adia and her team focused on their battlefield mission. Will family secrets and romantic complications derail her and her teammates?

What’s Cool from Coliloquy
Dark Fuel is the second installment of a new Active Fiction series from Coliloquy. Throughout the series, author Liz Maverick uses a unique interactive format to augment the typical reading experience. Hunt for clues alongside Adia, unlock secret scenes, and read carefully, as Liz reveals some ereader magic of her own.

My Thoughts:

I found Dark Fuel to be an improvement over the first Arcania novel, both in the story and in the interactive elements. I'll start with the interactive elements. The book starts off with a quiz hat allows you to find out which class you would belong to (I was a healer). Then there were a couple of hidden scenes that you would get to see depending on which class you ended up as. I thought that was very good. Once again though, I wish there was even more interactive elements, since I think it's a very cool idea.

On the the story. I found Dark Fuel to be much more pleasant overall, despite the fact they are in a war, because Adia finally had friends to share her highs and lows with. I felt so bad for her in the first book since she was so lonely, so I was happy that she had a supportive team behind her. However, don't get the idea that everything is rainbows and unicorns; there's a ton of action in this one.

My favourite part was watching Adia interact with her team. I loved how they all worked together and fed off of each other. I love Finola, she is so secretly kick-ass. And I'm also a fan of Seger, since I have a soft spot for sneaky, rogue types. And Grey. What can I say, other than I'm looking forward to seeing more of him.

And the ending! I love the cliff-hanger-y-ness of it. I want to talk about it, but it's a major spoiler, so you'll just have to read it to see what I mean!

Overall, I found Dark Fuel to be an improvement on Arcania #1, with a more fleshed out cast of a characters and improved interactive features.

On the Cover:

I like the style of the covers in this series, although I wish it was just Adia in the mirror.

Review: Etiquette and Espionage

Info:

Title: Etiquette and Espionage
Author: Gail Carriger
Series: Finishing School #1
Publisher: Little Brown Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: February 5, 2013

Blurb:

It's one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It's quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the same time. Welcome to finishing school.

Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is the bane of her mother's existence. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper etiquette at tea--and god forbid anyone see her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. She enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

But little do Sophronia or her mother know that this is a school where ingenious young girls learn to finish, all right--but it's a different kind of finishing. Mademoiselle Geraldine's certainly trains young ladies in the finer arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but also in the other kinds of finishing: the fine arts of death, diversion, deceit, espionage, and the modern weaponries. Sophronia and her friends are going to have a rousing first year at school.

First in a four book YA series set 25 years before the Parasol Protectorate but in the same universe.

My Thoughts:

What a pleasant surprise this book was! I've always thought steampunk was cool, but this is my first time reading a steampunk novel. I love it! The idea of Victorian manners mixed with cool inventions and dangerous airship!

I loved out heroine, Sophronia. She's a rough-around-the-edges tomboy living in a world of fancy balls and proper manners. From the first scene with her riding in a dumbwaiter, I was hooked. She's the kind of character I can really connect with: clever, resourceful, a good friend and not completely obsessed with boys.

And speaking of boys, I love Soap as well. He was just so likeable and I can't wait to see how differing social status is going to throw a wrench in his and Sophronia's friendship. I also loved the friends that Sophronia made along the way. Dimity and Vieve and even Sidheag. I also can't wait to see more of Captain Niall!

As well as loving the steampunk setting of this novel, I also liked the small additions of supernatural aspects: vampires and werewolves. I like that they didn't take over the story, but I thought they were a good addition. On another note, this book was so good that I went ahead and ordered the box set of the Parasol Protectorate.

On the Cover:

I love this cover. I love Victorian era costumes and the steampunk background is very cool!

Review: Arcania (Trial by Fire #1) + Giveaway

Info:

Title: Arcania
Author: Liz Maverick
Series: Trial By Fire #1
Publisher: Coliloquy
Publication Date: January 11, 2012

Blurb:

Born without arcania in her blood, Adia has lived in the shadow of her magical twin her whole life until the day she accidentally inherits her spellcaster sister’s talents. Now she’s got the ability to save the lives of everybody she loves…if only she knew the first thing about how to use it.

Once she leaves Earth for the training academy in Arcania, there are plenty of people who could show her the ropes, including darkly passionate Grey, the top shield at the school, devil-may-care charmer Seger, a swashbuckling rogue with a talent for daggers, and Finola, the clever and empathic healer with a gift for keeping her team out of sickbay.

With a battle heating up, Adia doesn’t have much time to learn how to use the magic that now flows through her bloodstream, earn a spot on a fighting team, and stop the ancient war between the forces of magic from spreading to Earth and destroying the loved ones she’s been forced to leave behind.

This is an Active Fiction title
"Active fiction" is a new type of e-reading experience that allows the reader and the author to interact with each other and the text in new and different ways.

In Arcania, Liz allows readers to hunt for clues alongside Adia. Struggling to unlock the secrets of her new powers, she also searches for answers about her sister’s last moments. What really happened to her twin? And what are the elders trying to cover up? Careful readers and Adia will learn that seemingly inconsequential choices can change your perception—and your reality—in an instant. Arcania - Trial By Fire 1

My Thoughts:

Let me start off by saying that the choose your own adventure books were my absolute favourites in elementary school. I'm pretty sure I read every one in my school library. So I was super excited to get the chance to read this book, which sounded like it would give me a chance to rekindle my love of this type of book.

Unfortunately, the interactive portion of the book fell flat for me. I think there were only a couple of places where I got to make a decision for Adia and they are super minor. So I was a bit disappointed on that front.

On to the actual story. I'll be straight with you; Adia's life sucks. Her parents and twin sister have ditched out to some magical land, leaving Adia on her own to care for her younger sisters. Then, when she ends up inheriting her sisters powers and going to the mystical academy, things get even worse. She's miles behind everyone and people are so mean to her. Liz Maverick did a good job making me feel the tension of the hyper-competitive academy.

However, I'm not a huge fan of Adia. Sometimes she does or says things that are incredibly stupid. I think I'm a much less impulsive person, so I can't sympathize as much as other people can.

Overall though, the world that Liz Maverick has created is very intriguing and I can't wait to see what happens between Adia and Grey, considering the history between Grey and her sister. I just hope the next one does a better job of being interactive!

On the Cover:

I really like this cover. I like the little design around the A of Arcania and I like how we can see the contrast between Adia and Lara.

Wisteria Blog Tour: Guest Post (Tens List)

I'm excited to welcome author Bisi Leyton to Megan Likes Books to talk about the 10 things she's learned as a writer. Welcome Bisi!!

Ten things you've learned as a writer

Number Ten

It’s a lonely job. No one’s ever going to be as invested in my work as I am. No matter how excited or thrilled I am about a plot twist, no one’s going to be more thrilled than me.

Number Nine

Everyone has an opinion and everyone’s opinion should be valued (even if I don’t agree).

Number Eight

You have to enjoy what you’re writing about and make it accessible to readers. I haven’t figured out the right balance yet, but I’m working at it.

Number Seven

Take time to invest in relationships otherwise you can spend six months on a book and people have moved on.

Number Six

I can actually write.

Number Five

Beta Readers are worth their weight in gold.

Number Four

Invest in a good editor

Number Three

Don’t over edit. At some point the books got to be ready, but knowing when is the trick.

Number Two

Don’t read reviews every day. I find a bad review can knock me off course for days, so I make it a habit of checking my reviews once a month. Then I can get all the hits at once.

Number One

It’s the best job in the world!

There's definitely some great advice in there! Thanks Bisi!

Wisteria by Bisi Leyton:
Sixteen year old Wisteria Kuti has two options—track the infected around the Isle of Smythe or leave the only known safe haven and face a world infested with flesh eating biters. But even with well-armed trackers, things go wrong and Wisteria ends up alone facing certain death, until she is rescued by the mysterious Bach. Uninfected, Bach is able to survive among the hordes of living dead.
Eighteen year old Bach, from a race known as The Family, has no interest in human affairs. He was sent here to complete his Great Walk and return home as a man—as a Sen Son. The Family regard humans as Dirt People, but Bach is drawn to this Terran girl, whom he has never seen before, but somehow knows.
Hunted by flesh eaters, cannibals, and the mysterious blood thirsty group called Red Phoenix, Wisteria and Bach make their way back to the Isle of Smythe, a community built on secrets and lies.

Praise for Wisteria:
“I love the buildup of this story, getting to know the characters and watching their connection grow. I had no idea which way the story was headed and I was kept in suspense right up to the very end! It has plenty of action and a fascinating plot and I can’t wait to see what Bisi Leyton has for us next!!”
“There are a lot of great things in this book, so much more than zombies and a struggle for survival. At it’s base core it is about star-crossed lovers, literally and the supporting characters roles… Ms. Leyton brings to Wisteria a mixture of science fiction, fantasy, dystopic world with a twist to the paranormal romance angle!”
“The book was full of nonstop action from the beginning until the end, and I did not put it down until I had finished it. I loved the book.”

Normalish Blog Tour: Review

Info:

Title: Normalish
Author: Margaret Lesh
Publisher: Musa Publishing
Publication Date: October 5, 2012

Blurb:

Fifteen-year-old Stacy questions the strange world of high school, love, her role in a harsh universe, and life, in Normalish.

People tell you high school's so great and wonderful, but they're lying. It's mostly horrible and full of disappointment. It sucks. Your best friend abandons you. The jerk you're in love with pretends to be  into you, and then the big dump. The boy you've really clicked with as a friend decides to go all crushy over you, so you break his heart just like yours was -- smashed into little pieces. Your sister goes mental, and you get involved with a guy who’s even crazier than she is (who you know is a very bad idea, but you do it anyway). Math only adds another stink of failure to the whole thing.

High school blows. Just ask freshman Stacy. She’d want you to know.

My Thoughts:

I found Normalish to be an enjoyable YA contemporary read. Stacy is generally pretty likeable, considering the crappy crap she has to go through. She states the facts of her life and of course complains, but most of the time it's not the whiney, makes-me-want-to-claw-my-eyes-out, complaining. It's the legit, yeah-that-is-pretty-shitty kind of complaining that it would be weird for a character not to do.

My favourite part of Normalish is the changes that Stacy goes through over the year in which the book is set. I love watching characters grow and the change is Stacy is very marked indeed.

I also enjoyed the supporting characters in Normalish, since they were realistic and could have gone to my high school (even stupid Anthony). My favourite character is Roman. He was basically the perfect boyfriend for Stacy's sister Becca and I loved how supportive he was of Becca when she had some serious stuff going on. Plus, he was really cool to Stacy, when he didn't have to be. I actually liked Becca a lot as well. She seemed like an awesome sister to have, despite the issues that arise for her (trying hard to be spoiler free here). We don't see much of Stacy's other sister Jill and that's something I wish had been added to the story more.

For the most part I liked Stacy, but there were a couple times she drove me nuts. The main one was how over the top crazy she got about having a monster pimple. For the record (to show I know what I'm talking about), I had a major pimple over the weekend, which resulted in my mom asking (in public) "What's on your face?" I'm 24 for goodness sake. Anyway, my point is that pimple suck, but there's not the end of the world and I got sick of reading about Stacy's pimple for 5 pages. Although I guess that's one of the ways that a reader can see how much Stacy grew over the book.

I'll admit it, this one made me cry a bit (mostly in the scene with Jimi). No spoilers, but I was pretty misty-eyed.

Overall, I enjoyed Normalish a lot. If you're a fan of YA contemporaries, you should enjoy this one.

Survival in his world, she learns, means not asking questions and staying out of the immortal council's way. It's a line she crossed long ago. Review: Exposure by Kim Askew and Amy Helmes

Info:

Title: Exposure
Authors: Kim Askew and Amy Helmes
Series: Twisted Lit #2
Publisher: Merit Press
Publication Date: January 18, 2013

Blurb:

Double, double, toil and trouble. Sometimes, the quest for high school royalty can be deadly! In this emotionally-charged twist on Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a self-conscious shutterbug named Skye Kingston navigates a treacherous school year in Alaska fraught with unspoken secrets and tragic twists of fate. Along the way she encounters three strangely prophetic BFFs; one social-climbing, sociopathic cheerleader; and a heart-stopping hottie named Craig McKenzie: the man who would be Prom King. Can Skye save the boy she loves — and herself — before they get caught in the crosshairs?

My Thoughts:

Despite the fact that I rated them the same, I preferred Exposure over Tempestuous, the first book in the Twisted Lit series. I think that's mainly because I connected more with Skye than I did with our previous heroine, Miranda. And I like Alaska.

Skye is an introvert, preferring to watch other people through her camera lens, rather than participating. However, once in a while she steps out of character, just enough to get herself into trouble. She ends up going to a party where she overhears something she shouldn't, leading to a whole mess of trouble.

I can relate to Skye, since I'm shy as well, although I doubt I would have made all the same decisions that she did. Craig McKenzie seems like a decent guy, although with a number of problems of his own. You know, one of those popular guys secretly harbouring a bunch of insecurities.

I didn't end up loving any of the characters in this one though, even Skye. I didn't hate any of them (except maybe Beth), but I didn't get a strong enough connection to the characters to warrant rating this one any higher.

On the Cover:

I like the covers in this series. They're plain, but interesting, if that makes any sense.
