Title: The Demon Royale (Dream Slayer #2)
Author: Jill Cooper
Expected Release Day: October 10, 2012

The only thing worse than dying, is running away…

Since becoming employed by a supernatural protection agency, Natalie Johnson’s life has been more interesting than ever. While most teens are working on their summer tans, Natalie works on slaughtering the undead lurking just outside her town’s borders.

The workload takes more than just a toll on her love life, it dampens her spirit and her health, as the town is plagued by a mysterious murderer intent on stealing the residents’ souls. Natalie’s investigation is hampered by her declining health and the sicker she gets, the more inadequate she feels.

Guilt over her inability to act, weighs heavily on Natalie’s shoulders during a time when her strength is needed more than ever. As some of those closest to her begin to lose faith, she must make the hardest stand yet to save the soul of the one person she can always count on:

The Slayer.

I like the beach setting of this one. The deserted beach and grass growing in the sand give it a wild kind of look. And also be sure to check out the book trailer.

Telesa: The Covenant Keeper Blog Tour: Guest Post

I'm very excited to be taking part in the Telesa: The Covenant Keeper blog tour and to have the opportunity to share this awesome guest post about music in the book.

You better lose yourself in the music
The moment, you own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime,

                                            Losing Yourself in the Music.
Daniel - the musician
Writing is my gift but I’ve always thought that if ever God gave me the chance to trade in my gift for another, then I would be sorely tempted to exchange words for music. To me, nothing else has the immediate power to move you, envelop you and transform you the way that music does. It really is a universal language and in today’s conflicted world, we need all the unifying that we can get.

The first boy I ever loved introduced me to the art of using song to convey emotion and meaning. I was 14 and (of course) not allowed to have a boyfriend and so the only time I ever got to see him – was at church. ( Can you tell I’m Samoan!) He would make these cassette mix tapes for me with different songs on them and give them to me on Sundays. I would listen to those tapes all during the week (blissfully) and that was how he told me every day, that he loved me. Through music. Even now, 20 years later I can hear one of those songs on the radio and instantly be reminded of the thrill, the color and wonder of first love. TELESA:The Covenant Keeper is primarily a love story and so I relied a lot on music to inspire me because as we  know -  music is the language of love

Leila and Daniel
Not only that, but without music, I literally would not have been able to write this book.  I have 5 children and so finding a peaceful space to write can be a little tricky! My iPod was a lifesaver. The house could look like a telesa storm had swirled through it and the children could be squabbling, but once I put those earphones on and pressed PLAY? I was transported to a different world, one where a boy called Daniel writes his own music, plays the guitar and sings about love and heartbreak while a girl called Leila gracefully dances the Samoan siva.

My fave TELESA writing music? Eminem. Which is a little odd I know, because Eminem is not known for being a romantic love song kinda rapper! But I love the poetry of his lyrics, so raw and powerful. And at times confrontational. Everyone has times when they doubt themselves and their dreams. Songs like ‘Im not Afraid’ and ‘Lose Yourself’ remind me that it takes courage and  strength to fuel our dreams. Especially when others try to drag us down with their negativity and doubt. Listening to Eminem’s battle songs inspire me to fight harder, aim higher, and to write with fierceness. And his song with Rihanna  ‘ I love the way you lie’ was my TELESA anthem for just one verse alone.

Baby, please come back, it wasn't you, Baby, it was me.
Maybe our relationship isn't as crazy as it seems
Maybe that's what happens when a tornado meets a
volcano
All I know is I love you too much to walk away now
Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
Well that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
Well that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

Wow, very cool! I really love the story about the boy who would give her tapes at church. It's such a sweet gesture!

Cover Reveal: Reaper's Novice

Links:

Cover art design: Renu Sharma http://www.thedarkrayne.com/

Book description:

Seventeen- year- old Ana Maria Tei’s life has always been perfect: loving parents,  good grades, and a future so bright it outshone the sun. But now words like “separation” and “divorce” are sending her world plummeting to hell. Determined to keep her family intact, Ana plans a family-bonding trip from Vienna to Tuscany. Except fate has other plans. Ana’s parents and siblings are killed in a car accident on their way to pick Ana up from school.

Enter Grim, aka Ernest. He promises to relinquish the four souls if Ana agrees to trade her soul for theirs and serve a lifetime as his novice. In order for Ana to graduate from her Reaper’s Novice station to a Soul Collector graduate, Grim puts her to test. To her horror, she finds out becoming a Reaper’s Novice didn’t happen by chance.  It was preordained, and she is forced to make a choice:  save her family’s souls or come to terms with who she really is and complete the task set for her.

I like the way it looks like she is in two different worlds. And anything about reapers totally catches me attention. What do you think? Are you excited for this one? And a big thanks to ATOMR for organizing this cover reveal!

What's Next? (1)

What's Next? is a fun meme created by IceyBooks where you the readers help me to choose what book to read next! So here's a few books I have coming up to read. Which do you suggest?

The Brides of Rollrock Island

On remote Rollrock Island, men go to sea to make their livings--and to catch their wives.

The witch Misskaella knows the way of drawing a girl from the heart of a seal, of luring the beauty out of the beast. And for a price a man may buy himself a lovely sea-wife. He may have and hold and keep her. And he will tell himself that he is her master. But from his first look into those wide, questioning, liquid eyes, he will be just as transformed as she. He will be equally ensnared. And the witch will have her true payment.

Margo Lanagan weaves an extraordinary tale of desire, despair, and transformation. With devastatingly beautiful prose, she reveals characters capable of unspeakable cruelty, but also unspoken love.

Yesterday

THEN: The formation of the UNA, the high threat of eco-terrorism, the mammoth rates of unemployment and subsequent escape into a world of virtual reality are things any student can read about in their 21st century textbooks and part of the normal background noise to Freya Kallas's life. Until that world starts to crumble.

NOW: It's 1985. Freya Kallas has just moved across the world and into a new life. On the outside, she fits in at her new high school, but Freya feels nothing but removed. Her mother blames it on the grief over her father's death, but how does that explain the headaches and why do her memories feel so foggy? When Freya lays eyes on Garren Lowe, she can't get him out of her head. She's sure that she knows him, despite his insistence that they've never met. As Freya follows her instincts and pushes towards hidden truths, the two of them unveil a strange and dangerous world where their days may be numbered. Unsure who to trust, Freya and Garren go on the run from powerful forces determined to tear them apart and keep them from discovering the truth about their shared pasts (and futures), her visions, and the time and place they really came from. Yesterday will appeal to fans of James Dashner's The Maze Runner, Veronica Roth's Divergent, Amy Ryan's Glow, Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and Ally Condie's Matched.

Katya's World

The distant and unloved colony world of Russalka has no land, only the raging sea. No clear skies, only the endless storm clouds. Beneath the waves, the people live in pressurised environments and take what they need from the boundless ocean. It is a hard life, but it is theirs and they fought a war against Earth to protect it. But wars leave wounds that never quite heal, and secrets that never quite lie silent.

Katya Kuriakova doesn’t care much about ancient history like that, though. She is making her first submarine voyage as crew; the first nice, simple journey of what she expects to be a nice, simple career.

There is nothing nice and simple about the deep black waters of Russalka, however; soon she will encounter pirates and war criminals, see death and tragedy at first hand, and realise that her world’s future lies on the narrowest of knife edges. For in the crushing depths lies a sleeping monster, an abomination of unknown origin, and when it wakes, it will seek out and kill every single person on the planet
.
Which would be your pick?

The Guardian of Bastet Review

Book Info:

Author: Jacqueline M. Battisti
Publication Date: August 20, 2012
Publisher: Carina Press

Blurb:

Cat-shifter Trinity Morrigan-Caine has discovered a demon is killing supernaturals. Magically challenged, she has every intention of letting handsome Alpha werewolf Gordon Barnes handle it. But after a dying vampire gifts Trinity a mystical amulet, she is drawn into the fray as the legendary Guardian of Bastet, a warrior born when the need arises.

Though Trinity initially rejects the role, she warms to the idea when Gordon agrees to train her—and their passion for each other grows as he teaches her to embrace her animal instincts.

As she begins to accept her destiny and believe in her growing powers, Trinity realizes the danger is even closer to home than she ever imagined—and she and Gordon are going to have to face the demon in a fight to the death..

My Thoughts:

The Guardian of Bastet was a ton of fun! Trinity is a really spunky, outspoken heroine whose flaws only make her more entertaining. I also really enjoyed the politics of the Genesee Valley Society of Others. The mix of witches, shifters, necromancers, sorcerers and even the neighbourhood vampire makes for some interesting interactions. I enjoyed the hints of elitism and racism that come through from some of the characters.

The story moves along fairly well, with things definitely picking up speed in the second half. And there is definitely a lot of excitement going on in Rocester!

Like I said above, Trinity is a likeable, feisty heroine who's not afraid to say what's on her mind. I also love how she was not a static character, but instead had to do some growing up as she takes on her role as the Guardian of Bastet. On occasion she did annoy me a little, either when she said something particularly rude or when she did a bit too much "thinking with her hormones." But overall, I'm definitely a fan of this kick-ass herione. Gordon was a likeable love interest, though perhaps not my style. I felt their romance was a bit rushed, but I do appreciate Gordon's protectiveness. I can definitely see some struggles for dominance coming up with this relationship!

Overall, The Guardian of Bastet was a fun read with a fun, feisty heroine and lots of excitement.

Please note that The Guardian of Bastet contains adult content and is not suitable for young adult readers.

On the Cover:

I like the cover, but I don't feel like it's very memorable.
