Review: Quest for the Scorpion's Jewel

Info:

Title: Quest for the Scorpion's Jewel
Series: Amerias Adventures #1
Author: Amy Green
Publisher: Warner Press
Publication Date: July 1, 2011

Blurb:

The Amarias Adventures are centered around Jesse, a young teenage boy who lives with his aunt and uncle in the world of Amarias. A tyrant king lords over the Amarian people, some of which have banded together to form the Rebellion against their ruler. Things are not easy in a land of constant upheaval, but this environment spurs Jesse to move beyond his self-doubts and physical infirmities as his faith is tested and refined.

Book 1 Quest for the Scorpion's Jewel One night as he is working at his aunt and uncle's inn, Jesse is visted by three members of the Youth Guard who convince him to join them on their quest for the Scorpion's Jewel. They have been hand-selected by the king for this task and their success will win them great favor, but they need his help. Their leader has been seriously injured by the Rebellion and must remain behind. Can Jesse possibly be the leader they're looking for? Will he learn to put his faith in something or someone greater than himself? What path will h
e follow?

My Thoughts:

Overall, I found Quest for the Scorpion's Jewel to be an enjoyable read. It's a short one at 172 pages and is an adventure-filled middle grade read. I enjoyed the major theme of loyalty and friendship that ran though this novel. It is Silas and Rae's loyalty to their squad leader Parvel that brings them to Jesse in the first place. I love how these young people always had each other's back, even though it often would be much easier to just look the other way.

Jesse was a likeable main character who shows a lot of determination and strength, despite a physical handicap. His loyalty to his companions, Rae and Silas, is impressive and I was glad to see that this loyalty was returned. All of the characters were likeable, with each showing a distinct personality.

The plot was fun and filled with interesting adventures that I think will appeal to a lot of young readers. I think this book will also appeal to a lot of parents, since it has a lot of good messages for kids (loyalty, doing the right thing etc) without being boring.

One thing that surprised me about this book was the religious aspect (yes, I realize it's right there in the blurb, but I sometimes don't read those very thoroughly). Jesse has never really believed in God, but through the book he begins to find some faith. As a non-Christian, I'm always wary of books that delve into religion in this manner. However, I didn't find the book to be overly preachy and the adventure aspect of the book definitely outshone the religious aspect.

Overall, I found Quest for the Scorpion's Jewel to be a fun, enjoyable middle grade read. I would recommend it for readers who enjoy adventure and also to parents who want to feel comfortable with what their children are reading.

On the Cover:

I'm not crazy about this cover. I can see that the designer was going for, with the medieval feel of the story, but it doesn't stand out enough for me.

Review: Zero Gravity Outcasts

Info:
Title: Zero Gravity Outcasts
Author: Kay Keppler
Publisher: Carina Press
Publication Date: April 30, 2012

Blurb:

Minka Shokat only needs two things in life: her fourth-generation Wayfarer spaceship, and two best friends and crewmates by her side. Anjali and Tex were the only people to stand by her after she was falsely branded a traitor and kicked out of Central Command five years ago.

Since then, Minka has kept as far from Command as the galaxy will allow. Working with her friends on their own terms beats flying warships any day. But keeping her junker of a ship flying takes money-money that Minka and her crew don't have. As a last resort, she reluctantly accepts a job transporting cargo for Central Command.

Then she finds out what her "cargo" is: the very general who ruined her reputation and currently needs Minka to deliver him safely to a peace conference. Now Minka and her biggest rival must work together to fight off space pirates, commandos and rebels who are determined to stop their mission-or be blown out of the skies for good.

My Thoughts:

I'd like to start off by saying that I don't read novellas very often, as I prefer longer, more in depth stories. When I requested this one from Netgalley a few months ago, I didn't realize it was a novella. I just happened to glance at the location on my Kindle a few pages in and realize that I was already 20% done.

Since Zero Gravity Outcasts is a novella, it felt short to me, like a TV episode, opposed to a full-length film like a novel would be. There is very little world-building, due to the short length and I definitely found myself wanting more in that regard.

I found the characters to be a bit flat as well. Each of our main characters have a bit of back-story added in, but not a lot of depth. Minka, the heroine, comes across as determined and loyal, but I still didn't feel like I got to know her by the end. Anjali was the least  developed of the main characters and all I could really tell about her was that she was organized and loyal. Tex came across as a very stereotypical gay man, despite his tragic backstory. I was a bit disappointed and wish that his character could have moved beyond hitting on the major and calling everyone "girlfriend". Major Reyne Jallomy was probably the most dynamic of the characters, as he reconnected with Minka and reassessed his loyalties.

Zero Gravity Outcasts' biggest achievement is the high level of action. If you're looking for some sci-fi, space-travel action, with weird inventions and plenty of under-dog space battles and don't really care about a strong connection with the characters or world, then this is the novella would be a good pick. I definitely see it like a pilot episode of a TV show, full of action and intriguing enough to make you try episode 2.

On the Cover:

I found this cover to be a bit plain, although I could definitely see the model as Minka.

Waiting on Wednesday (4)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I chose Icons by Margaret Stohl. While I haven't read Beautiful Creatures, it seems really popular and I'd like to read this one from one of the series authors. It sounds weird and creepy and awesome!

Your heart beats only with their permission.

Everything changed on The Day. The day the windows shattered. The day the power stopped. The day Dol's family dropped dead. The day Earth lost a war it didn't know it was fighting.

Since then, Dol has lived a simple life in the countryside -- safe from the shadow of the Icon and its terrifying power. Hiding from the one truth she can't avoid.

She's different. She survived. Why?

When Dol and her best friend, Ro, are captured and taken to the Embassy, off the coast of the sprawling metropolis once known as the City of Angels, they find only more questions. While Ro and fellow hostage Tima rage against their captors, Dol finds herself drawn to Lucas, the Ambassador's privileged son. But the four teens are more alike than they might think, and the timing of their meeting isn't a coincidence. It's a conspiracy.

Within the Icon's reach, Dol, Ro, Tima, and Lucas discover that their uncontrollable emotions -- which they've always thought to be their greatest weaknesses -- may actually be their greatest strengths.

Bestselling author Margaret Stohl delivers the first book in a heart-pounding series set in a haunting new world where four teens must piece together the mysteries of their pasts -- in order to save the future.

What are you waiting on this week?

Favourite Book Trailers

Before I started Megan Likes Books, I had no idea that book trailers even existed. I would just go to the store, pick out a book with a pretty cover and an intriguing synopsis and pay my money. But, since I've started book blogging, I've started watching book trailers and the ones I've seen have run the gamut from absolutely amazing to completely dreadful (you know, the ones with words that appear with those annoying powerpoint animations in front of a background). So, here are some of my recent favourites!

1. Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier
Ok, so I'm probably a bit biased on this one, since I absolutely loved Ruby Red and have to influencing everyone I know to read it as well. Although, I do think the reader sounds a bit older than I imagined Gwen to sound. But it sounds so British!

2. Eve and Adam by Michal Grant and Katherine Applegate
I've heard good and bad things about this one, but the trailer is pretty!

3. Enclave by Ann Aguirre
I haven't read this series yet, but the trailer is so exciting!

4. What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang
I really can't wait to read this one. It sounds like such a cool idea.

5. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
This is my favourite of the bunch. So creepy!
I'd love to hear what your favourite book trailers are!

Review: Once Dead, Twice Shy

Info:
Title: Once Dead, Twice Shy
Author: Kim Harrison
Series: Madison Avery #1
Publisher: Harper
Publication Date: May 26, 2009

Blurb:

My name is Madison Avery, and I'm here to tell you that there's more out there than you can see, hear, or touch. Because I'm there. Seeing it. Touching it. Living it.

Madison's prom was killer—literally. For some reason she's been targeted by a dark reaper—yeah, that kind of reaper—intent on getting rid of her, body and soul. But before the reaper could finish the job, Madison was able to snag his strange, glowing amulet and get away.

Now she's stuck on Earth—dead but not gone. Somehow the amulet gives her the illusion of a body, allowing her to toe the line between life and death. She still doesn't know why the dark reaper is after her, but she's not about to just sit around and let fate take its course.

With a little ingenuity, some light-bending, and the help of a light reaper (one of the good guys! Maybe . . . ), her cute crush, and oh yeah, her guardian angel, Madison's ready to take control of her own destiny once and for all, before it takes control of her.

Well, if she believed in that stuff.

My Thoughts:

Overall, this one was disappointing for me. I hadn't heard anything about this book and just picked it up on a book-buying spree, so I'm not sure what I was expecting. There was nothing terrible about this one, but at the same time, there was nothing that stood out in a good way. The entire thing was underwhelming.

Madison Avery is dead. But in reality, that doesn't mean much to the reader, just that she can't remove her amulet. I had no connection at all with Madison. She was meant to be spunky and care-free, despite being dead, but none of it rang true for me. I found the supporting characters to be just as lack-luster. Josh, the potential love interest, could have had the whole tortured-popular-jock-with-a-sensitive-side thing going, but it didn't happen for me. Also, I thought it was totally unrealistic how quickly he bought into Madison's story. I would have been having multiple major freak outs! Barnabas, a light reaper, could have been so swoon-worthy, but he also fell flat for me. No spark; nothing to make me care one way or the other.

The plot also felt a bit convenient. The way the author arranged to have Madison and Josh be on their own for so long, it just felt too easy somehow. I know it was meant to be twisty at the end, but I think my lack of interest in the characters made the twists less impressive.

Another thing that drove me crazy was the really bizarre euphemisms Harrison used to avoid putting swearing in the book. Seriously? Puppy presents on the rug? What 17-year-old says that? Maybe my high school was just ghetto, but I remember there being tons of swearing in the halls etc. But no puppy presents. I would have found it much less distracting if Madison could have just said crap or something normal.

I went into Once Dead, Twice Shy with no expectations, but I was disappointed none-the-less. The characters were lacking, a plot that should have been exciting somehow didn't excite me and  I really just wanted to get it over with to start my next read.

On the Cover:

The cover was probably the best part of this book for me. Although, the model should have had purple hair, as Madison was always mentioning her's.

Reading Through My Bookshelf

Last Weeks Status: 58
Incoming Books: 1

Current Status: 57

YES! Finally, this week my number of books on my shelf to-be-read has dropped instead of climbing! Unfortunately, I have a lot of ebook reviews to do, so hopefully it doesn't get too high before I can get back to my physical copies.
