I've been reading a lot of ebooks lately, but I'm starting a long run of physical books as soon as I finish my current read to prevent myself from reaching the dreaded 100 and so I can actually decrease my TBR instead of increasing it every week!

Interview: Richard Pitman

I'm excited to have Rich Pitman, author of the Jimmy Threepwood series, on the blog today for an interview. Before we get on to the interview, I just want to say how much I love the concept of Jimmy Threepwood. As a kid (and even now), I tended to cheer for the villians, especially Wile E. Coyote and Dr. Claw (from Inspector Gadget - probably because he had a cat), so I am definitely into the premise Rich has put together.

Hi Rich and welcome to Megan Likes Books!

Hello Megan, it’s my pleasure.

First, can you tell us a little more about Jimmy Threepwood?

I wanted to write something a little different, something dark filled with creepy characters. I didn’t want it to be the hero struggling, but ultimately winning, I wanted to explore and make the villain the lead character. I wanted to investigate why a villain such as Darth Vader, Lord Voldamort or the Child Catcher were evil? What happened to them?

Jimmy Threepwood is a dark fantasy adventure series of five books starting with Jimmy Threepwood and the Veil of Darkness. The story is about a young boy destined to one day destroy the world. Due to events revealed later in the book, Jimmy is unloved by his parents and not allowed friends or close connections.

Jimmy is collected from his home and handed to a sinister creation, the Gatekeeper, Lord of life and death. He is taken to a forest where he meets three other children, each pulsating evil and he is given his first powers, thus starting his journey to end the world… But Jimmy is different. There is one clear difference between Jimmy and his companions. Love. Love for his father…But a plan is set in place to sever the affection casting Jimmy on a path of vengeance and anger.

The story is filled with mythical creatures, magic and puzzles as the four children search for powers to unlock the secrets of the world. The essence of the book is ‘…even heroes do bad things’

I think it’s very cool that you have written a novel centered around a character who would generally be considered a villain. What was your inspiration for this and why do you think young readers enjoy it?

The inspiration – I love fantasy stories but the majority are written about the hero and what happens to them. They have a grave struggle but ultimately win. Everyone loves a hero.

I just thought it would be interesting to look into the past of four children to find out what happened to them? How did they end up in the forest ready to destroy the world?

The response from readers of all ages in the UK has been great. It’s a new twist on a modern tale of Evil versus Good. The basis of the story is built on whether Jimmy is actually the villain? Will he go through with it and ultimately destroy the world?
Rich and some young fans

What is the age range of the book?

That’s an interesting question. The book was written as a children’s book. Maybe for children aged 11+. But the response I’m having is that although children love the creatures and magic, it’s actually been read by more adults.

Describe yourself in 5 words.

I would say – Imaginative, energetic, passionate, thoughtful and creative.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer?

Editing. I can’t count the times I’ve gone back through the story and come up with new ideas or detail for certain sections. It has to be put the story on paper then go over and over it adding layer after layer.

Can you describe your writing style?

As I write the story unfolds in my mind, almost like a movie. I think about what the next section of the story is about and draw it in my notebook. Then…and this is where the magic happens, I go for a run and think about the story as it plays in my mind.

Then I write what I saw and how the characters felt reacted etc.

Who are your biggest literary inspirations?

Rich with some fans
I would say mostly Steven King. I love the horror side of his books and the way you look around the room checking you are alone as you read them. I’ve tried to make Jimmy Threepwood a little creepy, but it’s not scary, mostly just dark

What’s next on your writing agenda?

Jimmy Threepwood and the Veil of Darkness is out now on Paperback and Ebook.

The second book in the series, Jimmy Threepwood and the Elixir of Light is out in 2013 and I am currently 45,000 words into the third book – Jimmy Threepwood and the Echoes of the Past.

Very busy time.

Any words of wisdom for aspiring writers?

Keep going. Publishing is a very difficult world and it gets harder when you have a book out. Read and read your story and when you are finally ready send it off to agents.

The one bit of information is, don’t be too hasty to send it off. Make sure your story is completely ready and polished before you send it off. You don’t get too many second chances with an agent.

Where can we buy the book?

The book is available in Paperback and Ebook from Amazon , Waterstones and WHSmiths. It’s also available in a number of places across the internet.

Paranormal Reading Challenge: Angels/Nephilim

Wow, can you believe the first month of 2013 is already over? That means we're wrapping up Vampires and moving on to Angels and Nephilim. Angels have always been a hit or miss creature for me, but thank goodness I've had some luck and found some favourites. In books, I loved Unearthly by Cynthia Hand and I'm excited to continue the series. Also, I'm a fan of supernatural and I love Castiel. Two great examples of angels I like.

And don't forget Nephilim. I'm sure for many readers like me, when you think of Nephilim, you think of Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunters. To be honest, I'm still on the fence a bit. I loved the first three books of The Mortal Instruments, but the 4th book disappointed me, so I stopped reading, preferring to pretend the series stopped after book three (it tied up so neatly!).

As for my plans for this month, I'm keeping my options open. I will read at least one of the following:
Angelfall by Susan Ee
A Shimmer of Angels by Lisa M. Basso
Embrace by Jessica Shirvington

I'd love to hear what you'll be reading this month and be sure to link up your reviews to our linky for a chance to win this month's prize (TBA). Plus you have a couple more days to link your January reviews here before we give away the awesome prizes!

Review: The Life and Death of Lily Drake

Info:

Title: The Life and Death of Lily Drake
Author: T. Michelle Nelson
Publisher: Inkspell Publishing
Publication Date: October 2012

Blurb:

For Lily Drake, slaying vampires is easy...Dating them is the hard part.

Lily Drake is your everyday hard-working single mom…until a gorgeous vampire shows up on her front door who she mistakenly assumes is her blind date for the evening. As one crazy scenario after another unfolds, Lily finds herself falling in love with two vampires, slaying the evil ones, and being prophesied as the savior of the entire undead race.

Deciding between pizza and Chinese take-out will no longer be one of the hard decisions facing Lily Drake once she is emerged into vampire society. Humanity or immortality? That doesn't hold a candle against this question - which of the two handsome vampire cousins?

The Life and Death of Lily Drake is not your typical vampire love story. It’s a tale about the humorous mistakes a woman makes simply trying to survive not only life, but the dating scene. How will Lily manage working full-time, taking care of her young son and fighting the undead at every turn?

Lily will have to figure it out, but who better to save the world than a mom?

My Thoughts:

As someone who reads a lot of young adult, The Life and Death of Lily Drake was a bit of a departure for me as a reviewer. There's a big difference between a angst teenager and a 30-something single mom. That said, I did enjoy the change, there was a lot less beating around the bush than we find in most YA novels.

Let's start with Lily. My favourite things about Lily were how much she cares for her son and how kick-ass she ends up being. While I don't have any children yet, I am a major family person, so I'm glad family was so important to Lily as well. However, I found that Lily's love of her family sometimes felt a bit false, considering how she seems to send her son away for week-long sleepovers while she works through a vampire love triangle (more on that later). I honestly preferred Lily in the last 20% of the book, where she becomes majorly kick-ass in order to save her son.

I had a few issues with Lily's character, however. She does something that I absolutely cannot forgive her for (I don't want to say, as it would be a spoiler). Also, she drove me a bit crazy with her refusal to make one decision or another in regards to becoming a vampire (that's not a spoiler, it's in the blurb). It's like she completely expected to have her cake and eat it too and it got on my nerves.

And on to the love triangle. Because I read mainly YA fiction, which has way too many love triangles, the love triangle in Lily Drake was nothing new and I found it annoying overall. Besides, for me at least, it was such an easy decision! The guy who likes the same things as you and you have an absolute blast spending time with, or the guy who is "romantic" and bossy. I'd pick fun over romance any day!

Overall, The Life and Death of Lily Drake had it's ups and downs for me, but if you're a paranormal romance fan with a thing for vampires, you should enjoy it.

On the Cover:

I like the cover, but I don't really think that the model fits with my view of Lily. She looks too young (and I can't see Lily with that hairstyle).

Blogging Slump Alert

It would seem January has gotten to me and I'm in a bit of a book blogging stump. Here's why:

The Blog has Taken Over my Life!!

Don't get me wrong, I love reading! Always have, always will. Still it's not my only hobby. I enjoy gaming with the bf (serious, I just bought my own copy of Counterstrike!) and sewing (new blog here). I haven't done any sewing since I started Megan Likes Books almost a year ago and that makes me sad. Yet lately I've had a packed reading schedule and I started feeling guilty when I would spend my free time doing something other than reading. Wait a second! I started Megan Likes Books as a fun hobby, not as an unpaid job! There I'm taking a step back from book blogging in an effort to re-balance my life. That does not mean I'm leaving book blogging, so don't worry! Instead, I'm slowing down to just read the books I want, when I want, and review them because I enjoy it. I won't be requesting any more review books or joining any more blog tours, at least for a while. All review books and blog tours I've already committed to will be reviewed, although admittedly probably slower than I initially meant to.

I love all my blogging friends and will try to visit blogs as much as I can, although it may be less than before. And the Paranormal Reading Challenge will go ahead as planned, because I love it!
