Would you sacrifice everything for a world you barely knew?

It has been over a year since Charlotte and Kevin first stepped through the gate into Energo, and neither has been able to settle back into a normal life.

Even though she tries to deny it, Charlotte is in love with Calvin and can’t push him from her mind. She distracts herself with the antics of James and her growing friendship with Liam—the one person who seems to understand her.

Kevin is starting to adjust to his new identity as a college student and basketball player, but he can’t seem to shake his feelings for Samantha, his fear for Charlotte’s safety or the sensation that basketball is no longer enough.

When they unexpectedly return to Energo, both Charlotte and Kevin must face their fears and step up to become the leaders they were always meant to be.

Review - The Guardian of Isis by Monica Hughes

Goodreads Blurb:

Years have passed on Isis, but life has gone backward, not forward. Under their leader, Mark London, the settlers have abandoned the technological knowledge of their forefathers. Upper Isis is now a forbidden zone, and the history of the first inhabitants from Earth has been replaced by myth. But one inquiring young man yearns to know the truth, and soon he gets the chance to find it.

My Thoughts:

The Isis trilogy takes a turn for the dystopian in this installment. The Guardian of Isis is set two generations after the The Keeper of the Isis Light, so those that were children in the first book are now grandparents. However, things on Isis have gone astray, with the settlers abandoning technology completely and living in a complex system of hierarchy and taboo. A few characters from the first book reappear and the changes are remarkable.

I really enjoyed this book, more than the first in fact. I loved the main character Jody. I loved his insatiable curiosity and I'm pretty sure he is a genius! Not only is he smart and inventive, but he is very brave as well. However, Jody's curiosity gets him into trouble, as new ideas are frowned upon in the Isis society, especially by the President.

I really wish that this book was longer! It's a quick read at around 200 pages and I feel like it could have been fleshed out a little more. Or maybe I just loved the idea of this regressing society so much that I wanted more!

On the Cover:

I'm not super crazy about the cover, but I'm not a huge fan of impressionist art, so that's probably it. I like clean lines. But I do love the background colour!

Favourite Character:

Definitely Jody! He's so inventive and brave and all-around awesome!

Favourite Scene:

This one is tough. I think the scene in the Sacred Cave when Jody figures out how to restart the light. Like I said, he's a genius!

Rating: 4 Hearts

Review Copy Cleanup - Love Will Find a Way

In the Love Will Find a Way Challenge we're sharing our all-time favourite books. If you were stuck on an island, or in a cave, which books would you bring? We're not limiting you to bring a certain amount of books, so give us your best!

Can I bring my entire bookshelf? No? Darn! Anyway, so this challenge, I would bring all the Harry Potter books and some favourite books from my childhood that will remind me of home. So those would include Anne of Green Gables (which reminds me of my dad), Black Beauty (which reminds me of my mom and my horse) and probably a Wrinkle in Time and Divergent because I just bought them last week! Besides that, I would load up my kindle with as many books as possible and hope that my cave/island has an electrical outlet!

Theme Thursday - Dearly, Depart Edition

Theme Thursdays
Theme Thursdays is a fun weekly event by Reading Between Pages that will be open from one thursday to the next. Anyone can participate in it. The rules are simple:
  • A theme will be posted each week (on Thursday’s)
  • Select a conversation/snippet/sentence from the current book you are reading
  • Mention the author and the title of the book along with your post
  • It is important that the theme is conveyed in the sentence (you don’t necessarily need to have the word)
Ex: If the theme is KISS; your sentence can have “They kissed so gently” or “Their lips touched each other” or “The smooch was so passionate”
This will give us a wonderful opportunity to explore and understand different writing styles and descriptive approaches adopted by authors.

March is going to be all about making life easy. This month we will do ‘Pick what you see first‘ themes.
Pick the last sentence from the last page of the book. Yes, the very last sentence. I am assuming it would be mostly ‘Happily ever after’ but lets see how books end.

ENDING - Last sentence from the last page of the book.

This week my teaser comes from Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel. I'm fairly close to the beginning still, so I hope it's not a spoiler!

Teaser Tuesday - Dearly, Departed Edition

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
Grab your current read
Open to a random page
Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Teaser this week comes from Dearly, Depart by Lia Habel, which I just started this afternoon! Since I'm only on page 14, this is a teaser for me as well!

" 'Protocol D,' " I began to quote. " 'No living person not interested in becoming acquainted with the sensation of his or her own body shutting down shall come into contact with the bodily fluids of Dr. Victor Dearly. This includes, but is not limited to: offering a hand should he cut himself, using his bathroom, or drinking from his I Love New London coffee mug.' "

Interview with Jessica Fortunato, author of The Sin Collector

Today I am super excited to share with you a little interview I did with Jessica Fortunato about her book The Sin Collector. This book sounds so exciting! You can check out the trailer right here, then continue on to hear Jessica's answers to my interview questions!

***

Hi Jessica,

Hey Megan! I’m happy to hear from you, I hope you are enjoying the book!

Did you come up with the concept for the Sin Collector is a flash of brilliance or did it have to percolate in the back of your mind for a while before coming together?

I first read about the mythology surrounding Sin-Eaters over a decade ago.  Their story always stuck with me as being beautifully tragic.  They were these beings, taking on a huge burden to save someone’s soul, but they were outcasts to society when they weren’t needed.  Finally, about three years ago I started putting ideas together to write a story based on these legends, and main character Liliana just blossomed.  Therefore, I suppose I percolated for a little over ten years...wow now that seems like a long time!

Which of your characters do you have the most in common with?

I probably have the most in common with my main character Liliana, since the whole story unfolds through her.  She is first and foremost incredibly sarcastic, which I am constantly.  She goes through a lot in the story, but never has a nervous breakdown and she isn’t a wilting flower.  I suppose we have that in common, if something needs to be done for the greater good we do it.

Describe the Sin Collector in 7 words.

Exciting, Mysterious, Fresh, Insightful, Philosophical, Unique, and Funny!

Did you have to do any research for the Sin Collector? If so, on what and how much?

I already had knowledge of the Sin-Eater legends, which turned out to be the easy part!  In the book, my characters travel all over the globe.  I was constantly trying to stay accurate as to how long a flight from here to there would take.  At one point, they are traveling by boat, and I had to hop on to some forums and learn about how boats chart their courses and how long a specific kind of boat would take to get from one destination to another.  I met many cool people on chat sites researching Ireland, and Madrid as well.

If you won the lotto, what is the first thing you would buy?

A publishing company. LOL I’m just kidding.  I would probably help my family pay off their debts before anything else.  The first “frivolous” thing I would probably buy is a cool car.  I’m not usually a car person, but I LOVE the 2012 Chevy Camaro.  It just looks bad ass!

What three authors have most influenced your work?

Oscar Wilde, he was never scared to be snarky and sarcastic, which I adore.
Alice Hoffman, I have never walked away from a single book of hers without feeling a sense of magic.  She often writes about the strong bonds of family, which is a central theme throughout my novel.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, because there was never anyone else who could wrap a mystery in a secret and then dip it in more mystery.  I worked hard to create a story that had the reader guessing until the very end.  I hope I succeeded.

Finally, do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

People will hate what you’ve written.  Not all people.  Many people will love your story, and give you credit for your hard work and imagination.  Yet there will still be people who don’t like it.  Don’t let those people destroy your dreams or your confidence.  The first time you get a bad review you are permitted to sulk for exactly two days.  Then you must boot up the laptop, put it behind you and move on.  Use any criticism to push you and better what you write next.  The story you’re telling is in your brain for a reason.  Just let it out!

 ***

Thanks so much to Jessica for doing this interview. It's so exciting to meet another Oscar Wilde fan! He's the one who taught me just how tasty cucumber sandwiches are and the importance on not having crumbs on your cuffs (among other things)!

I hope you enjoyed the interview and if you want to learn more about The Sin Collector and/or stalk Jessica, check out her website (beautifully dark), twitter, facebook, goodreads or go buy the book!

For my mysterious meetup, I would choose to meet Hermione Granger! Not only is she awesomely smart and brave and generally kicks butt, but I hope she could teach me a spell or too and maybe help me out with my potions homework. And if the fact that she can do better than Ron came up, well...

Review: The Day of First Sun by Sheryl Steines

Goodreads Blurb:

When Princess Amelie of Amborix is murdered by magical means, Annie Pearce and Bobby “Cham” Chamsky of the Wizard’s Guard are called in by the FBI. Their job is to help solve the crime while keeping the non-magical world from discovering the existence of the Wizard Council.

During their investigation, Annie and Cham discover that Princess Amelie’s death is connected to a series of other crimes in the Chicago area. A larger plot involving, a vampire, a rogue wizard and an army of soul-less zombies is revealed, but can Annie and Cham discover who is responsible before The Day of First Sun?

My Thoughts:

This books reminded me vaguely of Harry Potter; magical beings living among us in their own communities, while us normal folk don't notice a thing. The headquarters of the Wizards Guard, where Annie and Cham work, reminded me of the Ministry of Magic, a big, official magic hub.

The Day of First Sun was fast paced and had a whole ton of magic. Magic is definitely a huge part of Annie and Cham's lives. They use it for everything from teleporting to healing to summoning their clothes when they wake up in the morning. In this book, there is a very strong distinction between black and white magic, rather than being on a continuum. There was no grey area as far as I could see.

On the down side, I didn't feel a much of a connection  with the characters as I would have liked to. There was nothing wrong with them, I just didn't fall in love with them. I would have liked to see more of a lead-up to Annie's decision about Cham. Also, maybe it's the gamer girl in me, but I felt like the Wizard Guard was overpowered. Every thing they did seemed like a bit of a cakewalk, but maybe that's how law enforcement should be. Also, I could have done without the prologue or epilogue (which had a weird shift from third person to first).

On the Cover:

I don't mind this cover, although I'm not a huge fan of brown. I think this cover feels more like high fantasy than urban fantasy though.

Favourite Character:

Honestly, probably Sturtagaard. He's everything a vampire should be: selfish, smart and vicious. Definitely not sparkly!

Favourite Scene:

Sturtagaard's epic escape attempt.

Sturtagaard chose not to speak, though it was he who had called for the meeting. They both checked their watches and realized they had been sitting across from him for ten minutes, watching him sniff the air. If he wanted to play this, they would play along at least for a little while longer, though both were tired of the leering. As the vampire sniffed again, Cham finally figured out why.

"You know, you called us. We really don't have anything to say to you, so if you're just playing games, we're happy to leave. I've got other, more important things to do than watch you sniff and leer," Cham finally said, and stood up.

Sturtagaard smiled as he watched Cham open the door because he much preferred dealing with Annie, but when she stood up, too, he realized he'd overplayed his hand.

"If I talk, my employer will have me staked. I'd like some assurance that you won't do the same," he said rather quickly, before they left.

They turned and looked at him, both rolling their eyes.

"I'll have you staked if you don't talk," replied Cham, as he stood by the door.

"You're out of options if you ever hope to get out of here again," Annie said calmly, focusing on his face.

Sturtagaard squirmed a little in his seat, as Annie's expression was somewhat disquieting and unemotional. He looked at Cham, whose face was expressionless, and then back to Annie, who hadn't moved a muscle. The vampire sighed.

"You heard right. I was hired to create a zombie army to overthrow the Wizard Council," Sturtagaard said. His voice remained steady and calm with resignation.

"Who wants to overthrow the Council?" asked Cham, his hand still clutching the door.

"My employer. I've told you, I don't know who he is. I always dealt with his associate. He'd show up, leave notes, or send others with messages. I've never contacted him." He looked from one to the other, but they both remained stony and detached. "Come on, now. I can't give you information I don't have." Sturtagaard was charming.

Annie rolled her eyes again. "You really don't have any idea who the employer is?" she asked with sarcasm.

"Really, I don't," he said.

"So you're building an army of the dead. How long did you have to get this done?" Annie took out her phone and pulled out her calendar.

"He wanted it ready for September first."

Annie looked up with a grimace, and Cham looked surprised. She didn't need to mark the date on her calendar or research its significance, though neither could figure out why a zombie army had to be created for that day, the Day of First Sun. It was a very powerful and ancient day for good magic.

"So, your employer wants an army of the dead on that day? Why?" Cham asked in a flat, emotionless voice.

"He's a black wizard. What do you think he wants? He wants to overthrow the Council, take over the world, practice magic in the open. You know, the typical magical fantasy." Sturtagaard grinned because he believed that would benefit the entire supernatural world.

"Wipe the smirk off your face, Sturtagaard. Having free reign won't be as good as you think, with all the angry mobs, torches, and stakes through the heart."

Annie smirked at Cham, who shook his head and laughed. He waited to compose himself before looking back at the vampire.

Review - Gate to Kandrith by Nicole Luiken

Goodreads Blurb:
Sarathena Remillus, daughter of the newly elected Primus of the Republic of Temboria, has been given a mission: discover the secret of slave magic. Anxious to escape the corruption and treachery of the capital, Sara welcomes the chance to finally prove herself far away in Kandrith, the tiny nation of former slaves.

Accompanying her on the journey is Lance, a Kandrithan to whom Sara owes her life. Lance despises the nobility, and is determined to resist his desire for Sara, despite her attempts to entice him into divulging the secret of his magic.

Soon their travels become fraught with peril, and Sara discovers she's fallen victim to the ultimate betrayal. To end a war between two nations, she will have to make the ultimate sacrifice...

My Thoughts:

First of all, I really loved this book. The world building was amazing. I love how Nicole Luiken was able to introduce the reader to her magical world and make them fall in love with it. I appreciated having some background on the mechanics of magic in Kandrith, but I really like that the background wasn't delivered in a heavy-handed way. We learn the secrets of "Slave Magic" step by step along with Sara.

A large portion of this book is what I like to call a "road fantasy," where the characters are traveling from one location to another, having various adventures along the way. Road fantasies can be awesome or they can drag on and be boring. Gate to Kandrith was definitely the former, with enough action and tension (sexual and otherwise) to hold the reader's interest.

On that note, please let me warn you that Gate to Kandrith is definitely not for young readers. There are some adult situations with varying degrees of graphic imagery (I feel that because I read and review YA books as well as adult, this warning is important).

I enjoyed Gate to Kandrith's examination of issues including corruption, racism and slavery. For example, can a person be morally good and still own slaves, or is it mutually exclusive? At what point do you give up on someone you love(d)? Do you ever? I guess that last question will have to wait until the next book is released.

I was also really pleased with the ending of this book. Whenever I'm reading a book and really enjoying it, I start dreading the ending. I've been burned too many times by books that start off amazing and have a really terrible ending. But Gate to Kandrith was excellent, a fast-paced, extremely exciting ending with a bit of a cliff-hanger that makes me super eager for the next installment (Nicole assured me she is working on it).

Favourite Scene:

Oh my gosh, the final climactic scene is so intense! It is definitely my favourite part. I literally had to drop everything to finish this book!

Favourite Character:

Sarathena Remillus. Sara was loyal, kind and selfless. That said, she was by no means perfect. She was quite naive is many ways and tended to be a bit reckless. She is also a great example of a person shaped by the environment they grew up in, but not bound by it.

I also liked Julen a lot. Ambition is sexy!

My Rating: 5 Hearts!

Review Copy Cleanup - Don't Be Such a Tease

The Don't Be Such a Tease challenge is all about being the biggest tease possible. We are all reading books that aren't published yet, and what is more fun than showing other readers how awesome your current read is! The challenge is to share a few sentences from the RCC book you are reading right now, so we can all get a little taste.

Because I used my current read for Teaser Tuesday here (I haven't gotten much reading done thanks to midterms), I'm grabbing one I haven't started yet and giving a little tease! This teaser comes from The White Oak by Kim White, which I haven't started yet, but it seems pretty cool from this teaser!

"From up here I can see everything: the myserious river that brought me here, the barren plain of Asphodel, and the black river Tartarus - wide as an ocean, with a giant leaden sphere, the size of a small planet, rotating in its oily waters."

FOOD - First snippet from the book having any relevance to food, drinks, eating, drinking

This week my Theme Thursday comes from The Day of First Sun by Sheryl Steines. It isn't precisely about food, but it involves drinking, so here we go!

"Gibbs handed Annie a potion to restore her energy made from mint, a small dose of honey for sweetness, and a mixture of herbs that he refused to reveal. She drank it slowly, but made a face when she swallowed."

Free Reads Week from Inkspell

Hey guys, guess what? This week, from March 12th to March 16th, InkSpell Publishing is organizing a free reads week. That means that you can read free short stories by some of the InkSpell Publishing authors.

Today's free read Forever Yours by Shilpa Mudiganti, the author of contemporary romance novella Always You. In Forever Yours, main character Amelia loves Aaron, her fiancé. But she also loves Damon. Can one be in love with two men at the same time? How do you define infidelity? Or fidelity?

And there’s more. Not only is InkSpell Publishing handing out free short stories to their readers, they’re also organizing a contest at the end of the week. Participants in the contest need to answer one question from each story correctly, and in return they can win a $10 Amazon Gift Card and an InkSpell novel of their choosing! Awesome right? What are you waiting for?
