Paranormal Reading Challenge: Mermaids

I think I probably said this for aliens month, but mermaids month is the one I'm most scared for! But reading challenges are about just that, challenging yourself! What kind of challenge would it be if it was "Read What You Always Read Challenge"?

But seriously, mermaids! I've never read a mermaid book in my life. My mermaid experience in life accounts to this:

This month, I'll be reading Florence by Ciye Cho. I'm not sure what to expect, but fingers crossed it will be a good one!

I can't wait to see what you guys read this month! Be sure to link up your reviews below. This month's prize is an ecopy of Florence!

  2. I also have had trouble finding good mermaid books. I did enjoy Of Poseidon though!

  3. I'm with you in my apprehension. I'm thinking these YA books might be the cheesiest of all YA books.
I'm also lamenting that I read a fantastic mermaid book already, a couple of years ago. It's a Children's read (which might actually be against the rules of the challenge. I'll have to look back to confirm), but it's so good that I have to recommend it here. It's called "Keeper" by Kathi Appelt:

It's about a little girl whose mom abandons her when she's young, leaving her with her best friend. The girl thinks her mom left because she was a mermaid and had to return to the sea (but really she was just s(h)el(l)fish). There's all sorts of mermaid lore from various countries and continents, and the grown-up relationship in the book (between what are essentially her foster parents) is the sweetest I've ever read. It's the best marriage proposal EVER (not a spoiler!). Eventually, the girl encounters a problem she thinks she needs her mom's help on, so she decides to sneak out to the wild expanse in the middle of the ocean to ask for her advice. Obviously, that's dangerous and it does not go smoothly.

I have a question: do sirens and selkies count this month, too? Or just straight-up mermaids?

  5. So my book ("The Salt God's Daughter") wasn't blatantly about supernatural water beings. In the end, you're left questioning if the characters who're supposed to be creatures from folktales really WERE magical or not. There's no question as to if they're extraordinary - because they are - but they might just be extraordinary humans, surrounded by an air of mystery, misinterpreted and misunderstood.

Regardless, it was an AWESOME book & I'm happy I chose it.
