It's Thursday: Let's Vlog (2): Anti-feminism in YA

So this week I'm responding to this article asserting that YA is anti-feminism.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this issue! Am I way off the mark and YA does emphasize being desirable as being more important than any other personal characteristics? Or do you agree that much of the YA genre focuses on strong heroines who just happen to fall in love along the way? Leave your comments below!

  1. Books have changed SO MUCH since Twilight. It's not ALL about "getting the guy" but instead situations where the female can be strong and powerful. They're not just waiting for a guy to save them.

I love having romance in books, but it's possible to have romance AND still have an awesome heroine at the same way. OR to have a strong female AND male lead working together, rather than having the male save the day.

You're right that there are still some books with weaker females (who can usually grow out of their hesitations and weakness to become a stronger character), but what's wrong with that, either? I mean, isn't that the freedom of writing? We can write about ANYTHING? I think that girls reading should still think about what their reading and realize that it's still fiction. For most books, there is still something to be taken away from the story that people can learn from.
